How to File a Cyber Crime Complaint in India

Cyber crimes like online fraud, hacking, identity theft, phishing, social media harassment, and online blackmail are becoming more frequent.If you are a victim, it's important to report the incident quickly.This helps in keeping evidence and helping with the investigation.

Report the Cyber Crime Online

The Government of India has a National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal where you can report cybercrime complaints.

This portal lets you report different kinds of cybercrimes, including financial fraud online, hacking, ransomware, crimes related to cryptocurrency, and crimes related to online or social media.

Visit the Cyber Crime Reporting Portal

Go to the official National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.

Choose the right category for your complaint.Usually, you need to register with your mobile number and get an OTP to verify before submitting the complaint.

Provide Complete Details

When you file the complaint, make sure you give accurate details about:

- The date and time of the incident

- How the cybercrime happened

- Phone numbers, email addresses, or social media accounts involved

- Bank or UPI transaction details, if applicable

- The website or suspicious link involved

- The amount of money lost, if any

- Details of the person you suspect, if known

Upload Supporting Evidence

Keep all the digital evidence related to the incident.

This can include screenshots, emails, messages, transaction receipts, bank statements, call details, URLs, photographs, and other relevant information.The portal's guidelines ask complainants to provide all the incident and evidence details.

Don't delete any of the original messages or other evidence related to the incident.

For Financial Cyber Fraud, Call 1930

If you lost money due to online financial fraud, report it right away through the 1930 Cyber Fraud Helpline.

Also, submit the complaint through the cybercrime portal.The government has specifically named 1930 for reporting such fraud.

You should also immediately let your bank or payment service provider know about the fraudulent transaction.

Can You File a Police Complaint?

Yes, you can also report the incident to the police.

Under Section 173 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, information about a cognizable offence can be given either in writing or through electronic communication, as long as it follows the legal requirements.A copy of the recorded information must be given to the informant or victim free of cost.

If the police officer refuses to record information about a cognizable offence, Section 173(4) allows you to send the information in writing to the concerned Superintendent of Police.

In some cases, you can also approach the Magistrate.

Keep Your Complaint Number Safe

After you submit your complaint, save the acknowledgment or complaint reference number.

It can be very useful when you need to follow up with the authorities or provide more information.
