UPI fraud can happen in various ways like through fake payment requests, QR code scams, phishing links, fake customer care numbers, or tricks that use social engineering. If someone has sent money through fraud, it's very important to act quickly because reporting early can help stop or get back the money.
1.
Call 1930 Right Away
If you lost money through a UPI scam or other financial fraud, report it immediately using the National Cyber Crime Helpline at 1930.
You can also report the incident through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. The official system helps the authorities and banks take action on reported cyber fraud.
2.
Contact Your Bank or UPI Provider
Tell your bank right away about the fraud.
Also, reach out to the UPI app or payment service provider and report the transaction.
Give them the transaction ID, amount, date and time, your UPI ID, and screenshots.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) suggests that customers should notify their bank as soon as they see an unauthorized electronic transaction because waiting too long can make losing money more likely.
3.
Keep All Evidence
Make sure to save all the evidence related to the fraud, including:
- UPI transaction ID
- Screenshots of the transaction
- Fraudster's phone number or UPI ID
- WhatsApp or SMS messages
- Emails and any suspicious links
- Bank statements
- Call details and recordings, if legally allowed
- Screenshots of fake websites or social media profiles
The cybercrime reporting system asks victims to provide transaction details and any available screenshots or other evidence.
4.
File a Cyber Crime Complaint
Submit a detailed complaint using the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.
Explain how the fraud happened, how much money you lost, and include all the evidence you have.
Once you file the complaint, keep the acknowledgment or complaint number safe so you can track and follow up on the case.
5.
Can the Money Be Recovered?
It's not always possible to recover the money, but acting quickly can help the authorities and banks try to stop or trace the funds.
The official financial fraud system notes that timely reporting can help in getting money back and finding who did it.
In some cases, the RBI's customer protection rules may offer zero or limited liability, depending on the situation and how fast you report the transaction.
For example, if a third party is responsible and you didn't do anything wrong, reporting within three working days can result in zero liability, according to the applicable framework.
6.
Secure Your Bank and UPI Accounts
Change any passwords or PINs that were used in the fraud, block cards if needed, and turn on extra security features.
Never share your UPI PIN, OTP, CVV, password, or banking information with anyone.
Remember that a UPI PIN is needed to make payments, not to receive money.
7.
Follow Up With the Authorities
Keep your complaint number, bank reference, and transaction details in a safe place.
Keep checking in with your bank and the authorities, and give them any extra details they ask for.
If your bank doesn't resolve an eligible complaint properly, you can also use the RBI's grievance redress mechanisms.
